Medical School Reunion: Class of 1959

A group of former students of Assam Medical College, Dibrugrah, from the 1959 batch celebrated the golden jubilee of their long acquaintance and friendship at the Best Western Hotel in the City of York on 7th of November 2009. Old photos were displayed and shared of the days in Medical school. The atmosphere was lively as the old friends reminisced and conversed about their lives in Britain. Accompanied by their wives, the group enjoyed a lovely evening with drinks and dinner.
It is amazing how this group of Assamese doctors has maintained this long unbroken friendship over the last fifty years. They meet often, individually and in large social gatherings to share news and information. This bond of friendship extends to helping and supporting each other when needed.
One could be forgiven for thinking these doctors were able to keep their friendship alive because they live in close proximity in the UK. But when you understand the distance between the places they live varies from 70 miles to 440 miles, you can see that they don’t live near each other at all.
This group of friends numbering originally thirteen, the highest migration of doctors to the UK from the 1959 batch of Assam Medical College, is unique in its history. Two of the group returned to India and three have sadly died in England. The remaining friends no doubt will continue to enjoy their long friendship by nurturing and continuing to appreciate its value.
