About Assamese Friends
Assamese Friends is a community website for anyone with a love of Assam. The Assam of old or the newer Assam, it does not matter. What matters is that we interact as friends. We show respect for each other and do not discuss topics that offend or hurt or that break friendships, but rather support each other with things that bind us closer together.
We don't know the exact number of Assamese families in the UK - an estimate would be 350 families. We are a small community in the larger scheme of things. We have a few organisations that attempt to gather people together in the UK. The two Bihu committees are an excellent example of successfully getting us together year after year. It would be so good if this website advertised all that was being arranged to facilitate and even greater community get together.
The Sahitya Sabha UK continues to nourish us with Assamese literature and culture and the United Assam Association has assumed the responsibilty of being representitive of the Assamese community , if necessary, at the UK Government departments and at the UK Office of the Indian High Commission regardless of whether you are a member or not!
Assamese Friends allows members of the community to have a voice. To advertise community events so that we can all enjoy them. It is a forum for ideas. We hope in time our pages will truly belong to you and be full of local news, graduations, weddings, births and so on. We also hope to encourage people to meet together (as you do) and invite others by a simple invite on the site. Our first event is the picnic in July. You might wish to organise something similar in other parts of the country - you might already be doing this, register on the site and send us your invite and we will put it on the website.
Assamese Friends is the idea of Jennifer Brahma and Christine Mahanta. Both women married to Assamese, have a desire to bring people together in friendship through a website creating an atmoshere of harmony and respect. Please don't be suspicious of us, we have no ulterior motive other than to create our own large Assamese villiage right here within these pages. All we ask is that you become a 'friend' by registering and this gives you the option to use the site fully.
We aspire to become the online community website for Assamese in the UK and abroad. To be the first place to look for information of social and cultural activities.
Will you be a friend?
